Mind control powers - how to control your boss and make them happy

Most of the time in a new role you will be working for someone who has a lot of other responsibility and if you start well and manage their expectations you will  -
*Make them happy
*Build trust
*Get the opportunity to have more control over your work
*Chance to do more cool stuff

So when starting a new role or new job you need to establish a good precedent.

Do this in a couple of ways

1. Respond clearly and quickly with what you are going to do and when - you don't need to promise doing something immediately but you need to be clear on what you are going to do a when

2. Do what you promise to do and do it with quality that exceeds what you think is expected

3. Do it FIRST before doing personal surfing or other items, if you finish early with high quality you will have time to do things for yourself, but if you do your personal things first you may not have enough time to get your work done or with the quality you need.

4. If you are not sure about the quality of your response, doing it first becomes even more important? Get it done and then send it in for feedback, this will create more of a burden on your boss, but it will improve their expectations and give them better understanding of what you can do.

For almost all bosses, knowing that you can do something at 70% every time is much more valuable than you being able to do things half the time at 50% and half the time at 95%. If they know what to expect they can plan and since they are frequently more busy being able to plan effectively makes their life much better.

You can improve from 70% over time, but the additional stress that your boss will take on if your quality is  variable will make them plan for the worse case 50% and treat you accordingly. Remember 50% is failing!

The more your boss can trust you to deliver what she expects, the better your relationship will be. If they can't trust you,  they will spend much more of their time supervising you and instead of you making your boss' life easier (one of the major points of your job) you will make it harder, which is not fun for either of you.

If you make them happy, they will trust you. If they trust you, they will give you more autonomy in your work (which will make you happy - autonomy is one of the best predictors of happiness in your career and life) and you will get the chance to do more exciting things over time.

Building trust gives you opportunity to tackle more, and when you tackle more cool tasks remember  -

1. Respond clearly and quickly with what you are going to do a when - you don't need to promise doing something immediately but you need to be clear on what you are going to do a when

2. Do what you promise to do and do it with quality that exceeds what you think is expected

3. Do it first before doing personal surfing or other items, if you finish early with high quality you will have time to do things for yourself, but if you do your personal things first you may not have enough time to get your work done or with the quality you need.

4. If you are not sure about the quality of your response, doing it first becomes even more important, get it done and then send it in for feedback, this will create more of a burden on your boss, but it will improve their expectations and give them better understanding of what you can do.

Repeat :-)
