How to fly - keep looking for different paths

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky are like shooting stars? (Shooting stars)
I could really use a wish right now (Wish right now) *B.o.B. Airplanes

Sometimes you are feeling down, this can be for good reasons - you are tired, work has been tough, you got into a fight with someone.

This can be for no reason at all - sometimes you just feel down as if the world is beating you down for no good reason. This happens to everyone, and can be very painful. It can lead to a downward spiral. Where something that feels bad for no good reason, ends up being damaging to you, you felt sad so you got into a fight, you didn't do the work you needed to, you miss your workout. Soon, you are dealing with real bad things.

It is important to fight these things off. Sometimes you need a wish. Use that wish to keep on fighting.

So airplane, airplane, sorry I'm late
I'm on my way so don't close that gate
If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight
And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night

If you keep this attitude you will be able to break the cycle. It is painful and stressful, as anyone who has run for a flight knows, but you need to remember two things

  1. The cost of most misses and failures is small and you can make them up so don't invest in the stress that makes these things worse than they are
  2. It can take a while to get back on track, and it is not effortless. Particularly if you are feeling down - say you don't want to work out since you are tired, push yourself, go out, do at least a little bit. Take the time to meditate, be nice to your spouse even if you don't feel like it.
This can be very hard to do, you can feel that you are facing a world shaking catastrophe and you just don't want to do the small good things that will get you out of it. You need to.

You need to get on it. You may not feel like it but you can do it. As Viktor Frankl writes

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

This is where you are and you can make it. Also remember there are many paths to making it. Just since you didn't make the 5 pm flight, there are other paths to take.

You can't force a specific solution. You can aim for a goal, and there are many paths to achieving that goal, and frequently you can get things done better and faster by trying a range of approaches instead of banging your head against the wall of one path in attempt to get through the wall. Look for the door you can open.

So keep the miss in context, force yourself to get back on track it is worth it and you can control it. Remember there are many paths to success.

So airplane, airplane, sorry I'm late
I'm on my way so don't close that gate
If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight
And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night
